Studies and Whatnot

Here's some more stuff I've done over the past few days. My job makes it impossible to actually participate in the Deathline challenge it seems, but I'm still going to try as hard as I can to get one study done a day at least.

Stupid Job

My job has taken away much of my available drawing time, but I will keep on pushing no matter what. Here are two color studies that I did from photos.

I Hate My Job

Unfortunately, my job keeps me so busy that I hardly have any time to do any good studies or anything. It seems as though on all of my days off, other restaurants schedule me for crazy shifts, and then I have to pick up other people's shifts that have called off. Overall, I really don't have much time, and it's frustrating. Anyhow, here are my new pair of shoes. Off to work I go.

Waking Up Early

I woke up at 7:30 am today, and I plan to keep this schedule up in hopes of being more productive. Today I painted two studies (one value study, one color study) and a guy from imagination (though his body/shirt frustrates me). And in the color study, yes I know that her hands are a tad small.

Life of Still

Here's another short still life. About 1.5 hours. I made a schedule of what kinds of work I want to do on certain days of the week, so I should have at least three still life pieces up every week. I've been drawing plenty of heads from Loomis, but they're in my sketchbook. I may try to do some Loomis stuff in Photoshop soon so I can upload it.

The Old Man

Tonight's study is a master copy of an oil painting of an old man. I can't remember the artist's name unfortunately. I now have three days off from work, so hopefully I'll be able to upload two things a day during those days. It's the time I'll be able to work on an imaginative piece and practice perspective.

Tomato Tamata

Here's another two-hour still life study. Perspective seems to be giving me the most difficulty right now, so on my days off of work, I'm going to work on perspective. On days that I don't upload stuff, it probably just means that all of my studies are traditional, and I don't have a scanner to upload them with.

Flesh Study

Tonight I decided to do a flesh study.  I spent about two hours and fifteen minutes on it.  I learned a little bit about flesh, but it's not rendered out super detailed or anything.  Now, I need sleep.  Working in an Italian restaurant all day then painting after work gets exhausting.

Another Pumpkin

Here's a two-hour still life.  I'm not that fond of it, but it's just one more bad painting out of the way on my path towards improvement.  I'd like to replace the pumpkin with an apple next time, and I'm going to keep working on glass and metal as well.

Character Crap

Working my new job and dealing with problems at home have made the past day hard to be productive, but I can't let anything get in my way for the Deathline Challenge. I missed yesterday, but I can't let that happen anymore. Tonight I worked on a character design, though I want to get it critiqued and work on it more. Tomorrow I night I plan on doing another still life.

A Couple Things!

Here are some digital figure studies and a photo study of a Roman statue. I know they aren't that great, but I feel like these studies are helping me improve gradually. And I never really draw figures with the tablet, so the figures are mainly to help me get used to doing contour drawing digitally.

Velasquez master copy

It's day two for me of the Deathline challenge, and I decided to go with a master copy today of Velasquez's famous painting of Juan de Pareja.  This took around two hours in Photoshop.  I tried to do this study before about six months ago and totally failed at it, but this time around I was actually able to get it close I think.

Deathline Challenge!

The Crimson Daggers are having a year-long challenge in which each person is to set personal goals and do something productive every day for a year. One great way to make efficient improvement is to do a daily study from life. I plan to update my blog every day possible from now on with plenty of work, so keep an eye out for updates.

Wicked

I had had this illustration based on the book Wicked planned for the past year pretty much, but never got around to it. Finally I took the time to sit down and do it, and it actually didn't take longer than a day to complete. Here I've posted the original thumbnail and the final illustration.

Things Are Gradually Picking Up

I think I've secured a job for now, which means a car soon enough. I'm also living in a better area than I was a few months ago, with much more culture and opportunity. Studies are showing some improvement as well, though I do need to get started on character designs for the big project soon. I'll try to scan some traditional stuff soon as well, but for now here's just two digital studies.

More Digital Studies

I apologize for taking so long to update. I've moved back to West Virginia, though now I plan to move again within the week; that's one reason for delays, though really it can also be tied to lack of motivation at the moment. I've been dispirited for a bit, though I'm now getting back on track and ready to kick my ass harder than ever. I wish I could upload my traditional studies as well, but no scanner or camera yet. I am working on an illustration for some card game, but for now I just have a few studies to upload. My next update should be much more interesting work.

Longfellow and more

My friend Alex King allowed me to create a concept for his character (from his short story) Longfellow.  I'm hoping to work with Alex a lot more in the future, as he has some really awesome short stories (mostly of the horror genre I believe).  If you're interested in reading any of his stories, you can reach him at aking@westliberty.edu .  Along with the concept, I've also posted quick mock layouts for website designs I'd like to try (for businesses in my town).  The layouts really are just meant to show color palette and layout ideas, so they were each done in about five minutes.  And sorry for not updating in such a long while.  I'll try to pick up the pace (moving just took a lot of time to get used to).

Photos

I've decided to start taking photos every day in order to keep a photo-journal of sorts to look back on one day.  Also, taking photos and editing them is really fun, so I'm hoping that one day I'll be able to get a nice camera in order to take much better-quality photos.  I call the photo series "Daily Life."

Studies

Now that I'm out of school for the time being, I don't have access to a scanner right now.  This sucks because I can only upload digital work now, but luckily half of my work is done in Photoshop anyway.  I'm trying to do the 100 things challenge right now and draw 100 heads and 100 figures by the first week of June, along with planning out my new personal projects and doing the typical studies.  Here are a few studies I've done in the past couple days; now back to drawing!

More Storyboards

This is the rest of the work for my Drawing class final project; I just wanted to do a few conceptual things from Hansel and Gretel (an illustration, concepts for a character, and storyboards from a scene in the story).  These are all things that I haven't done much before, so I really learned a good bit.  I'm hoping to do more work like this in the future for other fairy tales / myths.

Storyboarding

As part of my Hansel and Gretel condensed project, I did a short storyboard (four panels), and it was my first attempt at making a storyboard.  I found it really enjoyable, though not as easy as I thought it would be at first.  I think that making storyboards more often will really help me out overall with narrative and composition in anything that I make.

I should have more work up from Hansel and Gretel soon, such as character concepts for Hansel and more storyboards perhaps.

MAD festival entries

Here are my entries for the WV MAD Festival here at my school.  One is the witch from Hansel and Gretel, and the other is Oberon from A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Taking on Hansel & Gretel

Here are a few new things: a photo study, a study of my planar head cast, a Tron photo study, and some designs for Hansel and Gretel.  For my Drawing IV class I'm doing designs for Hansel and Gretel.  Here's a cover illustration I'm working on for the story and some rough concepts for Hansel to start things off.
